The Honest Breakdown

Best use cases — and real limitations.

We'd rather tell you upfront where this method doesn't make sense than match you to the wrong provider.

Best Use Cases

✓ Structured and unstructured cap styles

✓ Trucker hats and mesh-back options

✓ Beanies for cold-weather branding

✓ Flat or 3D puff embroidery on the front panel

Real Limitations

✕ Printing on hats is rare and usually not recommended

✕ Curved surfaces limit design placement and size

✕ 3D puff adds cost and isn't suited to fine detail

✕ Blank hat cost varies more by style than blank shirt cost does

Design Considerations

Designing for a curved, small canvas

Hat embroidery works best with simple, bold logos or wordmarks — fine detail and small text tend to lose clarity once stitched at cap scale. If your logo has a lot of fine detail, ask about a simplified version specifically for headwear.

How It Compares

Flat vs. 3D puff embroidery for hats.

Flat embroidery is precise and standard for most logos. 3D puff adds foam backing for a raised, bold look — striking on simple wordmarks, but it costs more and doesn't render fine detail well. Most first-time hat orders start with flat embroidery.

FAQ

Questions about custom hats.

Do you actually perform the work yourselves? +

No — Indy Custom Apparel is a matching service. We connect you with a qualified Indianapolis-area provider whose equipment fits your project. Production, pricing and turnaround are handled by that provider.

Can hats be printed instead of embroidered? +

It's uncommon — cap curvature and fabric make printing impractical on most standard equipment. Embroidery is the default method for headwear.

What's the minimum order for custom hats? +

Often lower than shirt minimums, since cap embroidery setup is quick — some providers will do a dozen or fewer.
